MASTER PROGRAM IN FISHERIES AND AQUACULTURE MANAGEMENT AND ECONOMICS

Text Box:   The opening ceremonyFAME is an MSc Program in Fisheries and Aquaculture Economics and Management and shall contribute to meeting the needs of human resources in fisheries economics and aquaculture in Vietnam and other Asian developing countries. The aim of the program is to provide an understanding of economics and its role in fisheries and aquaculture management and sustainable development. To provide a holistic insight to the industries students also attend courses in biology, harvesting technology and principles of organization. The aim of the program is to qualify students of both sexes for jobs in private organizations or firms in the fishing or aquaculture industry, as well as jobs in public fisheries and aquaculture management at the regional, national and international level.

This master degree program is offered by the Norwegian College of Fisfery Science (NCFS), Faculty of Bioscience, Fisheries and Economics at the University of Tromso, in cooperation with Nha Trang University, Vietnam. The study program is of two years duration, corresponding to 120 ECTS with courses comprising 90 ECTS and a research project 30 ECTS (European Community Course Credit Transfer System) at graduate level, within subject fields and international relevance, aimed at both foreign and Norweigian students. Text Box:   The small group of students offers excellent  opportunities for a productive and social study  environment, as well as good communication  with the lecturers (Foto: Jahn Petter Johnsen)It will also prepare students for work in both private businesses and public institutions, and will provide students with skills in economics and business administration, as well as environmental and social limitations to economic development and trade. Although FAME focuses on environmental and marine resource economics and business, basic courses aquatic natural science disciplines are included.

Most lecturers will be NCFS staff, but Vietnamese staff will lecture a quarter of the courses from second year. Norwegian lecturers and colleagues from Vietnam and other Asian countries will supervise about 20 master’s candidates per year with the best theoretical and empirical knowledge for thesis research

The NOMA program provides scholarships, which covers tuition fees, living cost and accommodation, travel expenses from home country, installation grant, medical insurance and visa. In 2010 the monthly allowance for living cost and accommodation equals NOK 1500 per student.
